SALINA — McPherson High’s ninth-grade volleyball team blitzed the field on Saturday to win the Salina South Invitational, going 5-0.
MHS was 3-0 in pool play with wins over Junction City (25-5, 25-8), Salina South (27-25, 20-25-15-4) and Smoky Valley (25-9, 25-15).
The Bullpups dominated Abilene 25-18, 25-20 in the semifinals, then polished off Hays in the championship match (26-24, 25-21).
“We improved our serving immensely from Thursday as we worked on our core values of mental toughness and discipline,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said.
Ashtyn Heim served 6 aces and a total 33 times with no errors and Lexi Kynaston had 9 aces, serving 43 times with only 2 service errors.
Hailey Henson led in assists as she was the sole setter running a 5-1. Middles Addie Seidl and Kynaston worked on blocking and hitting angles, according to Fitzmorris. Outside hitters Taylor Casebeer and Megan Lulloff did a good job of keeping ball in count and looking for holes in the opponents’ defense. Fitzmorris said the passing was a key, led by Taylor Casebeer with support from Lulloff, Olivia Morgan and Kynaston.
Other players who contributed, according to Fitzmorris, included Hope Werhman, Breanna Schnelle and Melissa Mintzer.
MHS is now 6-2 on the season.
