Cheyann Williams and Madison Schmidt zipped through their four doubles matches undefeated to lead McPherson High’s JV tennis team to a second-place finish in its invitational here on Tuesday.
Williams and Schmidt captured the No. 1 doubles division. Jensen Mierkiewicz and Caitlin Faulk were 1-2 for fourth.
Jacie Myers was 3-1 for second at No. 1 singles. MHS did not have a No. 2 player.
The five-member team still gave Goddard Eisenhower a run for the team title, but fell short, 47-39.
Other team totals were Campus (33), Andover (32), Hutchinson (29), Elyria Christian (12), Derby (6) and Newton (5).
“Another beautiful day for tennis. Couldn't beat the weather 77 and 12 mph wind,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “We were led by our upperclassmen, Cheyann and Madison going 4-0 and maxing out team points in their division. Next up was Jacie Myers, who continues to do very well in JV meets making it to her second JV final of the year, but coming up just short. But she continues to do very well for a freshman. Caitlin and Jensen showed improvement from their last JV meet finishing fourth and continuing to improve. It was outstanding as a team to be finishing above these other teams considering we have nobody to play No. 2 singles for us. With that said second place is very good.”
