LEAVENWORTH — McPherson College’s volleyball team overcame a 2-0 set deficit by winning two sets to force a fifth, but Saint Mary won the decider to take the KCAC matchup on Wednesday.

Saint Mary won 25-18 and 26-24 to open the match, but the Bulldogs came back for 25-15, 25-14 wins. But the tiebreaker went the Spires’ way for a 15-11 victory.

“Tonight's loss was a heartbreaker,” Mac coach Jessica Cleveland said. "After taking sets three and four by 10 points each to tie the match, we were unable to sustain the momentum and win the fifth set. A fifth set really tests your mental toughness and we were not able to carry it through to the end."

Lexi Kite had her usual double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs to lead the Bulldogs, while Leia Seiler chipped in with 14 kills. Jamie Siess led in aces with 5, Devrie Sombers had 6 blocks, and Morgan Little and Kaitlyn Heines led in assists with 20 and 16, respectively.

Mac, now 1-1 in the KCAC and 2-2 overall, will be playing in a tournament hosted in Omaha, Neb., this weekend by College of St. Mary. The Bulldogs will be playing Dakota State and Presentation College on Friday, then go up against Mayville State and Briar Cliff on Saturday.
