Fearless picks MHS in a close one with Maize South

Fearless Forecaster’s season goal is 80 percent.

He hit that right on the nose last week in the first round of games to kick off the 2017 season.

Despite struggling with the area games, our picker was successful in 24 of the 30 games that dotted the schedule.

Fearless was only 3-3 in the area games, misfiring on Little River, Smoky Valley and Hesston.

His other losses were Sterling to Doane in the KCAC, Baylor shockingly to Liberty in the Big 12 and Texas being humbled at home by Maryland.

The docket appears far more formidable this week, so it probably would have behooved FF to have a better start last week.

McPherson 21, Maize South 14 — The Bullpups avenge both losses from last year to the Mavs. Fearless was about the only picker I saw to correctly hit on last week’s MHS-Buhler game.

Buhler 42, Andover Central 21 — You can bet the Crusaders are steaming after last week.

Augusta 31, Clearwater 12 — The Orioles are in the softer part of their schedule to open the season.

Winfield 14, Circle 6 — Tough one to call. This will decide who finishes in last in Division III.

Last week — 4-0. Season — 4-0.

Smoky Valley 35, Larned 24 — Larned gave up 56 points last week to Pratt, but did score 46. Smoky’s ball control will keep Larned’s offense from running a lot of plays.

Hesston 42, Halstead 33 — The Swathers get back on track.

Marion 35, Inman 7 — The Teutons face a second straight probable playoff team.

Trinity Catholic 26, Moundridge 14 — The Wildcats played Marion tough last week and could very well make the playoffs, but what a tough way to open the season.

Little River 48, Bennington 34 — Levi Swenson and Peyton Harvey could put up big numbers again.

Rural Vista 52, Canton-Galva 35 — The Eagles appear to have playmakers offensively, but have to find a way to stop people.

Last week — 3-3. Season — 3-3.

• KCAC •

Concordia 31, Ottawa 28 — Tough start for the Braves.

Doane 31, Friends 17 — Doane took out Sterling last week, and Sterling is picked ahead of Friends.

Drake 44, Southwestern 14 — Big step up in competition for Southwestern.

Mayville State 34, Sterling 31 — Could go either way. Mayville knocked off a couple of ranked teams last year.

The rest of the KCAC is idle.

Last week — 9-1. Season — 9-1.

• BIG 12 •

Oklahoma State 58, South Alabama 21 — All that keeps OSU from being a Top 5 team is a shutdown defense.

West Virginia 35, East Carolina 20 — Mountaineers lost a tough one to Virginia Tech to open the season, so they need a bounce-back win.

Iowa 28, Iowa State 14 — ISU is better than last year, but still not the best team in the state.

Kansas State 49, Charlotte 14 — Still hard to gauge the Wildcats until they play somebody of substance.

Texas 38, San Jose State 31 — Surely the Longhorns won’t open with two losses.

Arkansas 31, TCU 30 — Tough road game for TCU.

Central Michigan 35, Kansas 31 — That KU pass defense is like a sieve. The ‘Hawks are looking at 1-11 if they don’t win this game.

Oklahoma 44, Ohio State 41 — Fearless changed this pick about 10 times. Ohio State almost never loses in the Big Horseshoe, but OU's Baker Mayfield is a special talent.

Baylor 52, UT San Antonio 30 — Baylor losing to Turner Gill and Liberty was the shocker of the weekend.

Texas Tech is idle.

Last week — 8-2. Season 8-2.
