NEWTON — McPherson’s seventh-grade football team excelled in all phases of its game with Newton on Thursday, pounding out a dominating 38-0 success to move to 2-0 on the season.
“Another impressive win for this young team,” MMS coach Brandt Busse said. “They are a fearless group of kids that play extremely well together. We had some setbacks this week due to some players being out, but that didn't stop this team. Dawson Gottwald stepped up and filled two different positions for us on the offensive line and defensive line. We also had multiple people step up in positions for us on special teams.”
MHS was able to erupt offensively.
“Offensively we had another great game on the ground,” Busse said. “Our line with the addition of Gottwald continued to just push through the defense, allowing us to rush for 165 yards. Last week our passing attack was minimal, but the guys turned it around this week passing for 163 yards and 3 touchdowns. Sam Becker looked impressive hauling in 7 catches for 127 yards and two of those touchdowns.”
And the defense was stingy.
“The defense continues to shutdown opposing offenses with another shutout,” Busse said. “Tucker Pelnar led the team in tackles with 5 solo tackles and Hunter Alvord had 1 sack. This team really swarms to the ball making it hard for other offenses to move the ball on them. Defensively this unit is impressive and they pride themselves on holding teams to no points. They are extremely disciplined and make few mistakes which makes them tough to beat.”
