McPherson Middle School’s eighth-grade A-volleyball team salvaged the day for the Bullpups as they were 1-3 in matches here against Hutchinson.
• 8th Grade A — The Bullpups had to work overtime to improve to 7-0 on the year.
Hutch outlasted MMS 26-24 in the first set, but the Bullpups came back for 25-22 and 18-16 victories as the match went overtime.
“After having not really been tested all season, this was our first true test and what a match it was,” MMS coach Jacque Colgrove said. “The last two days in practice we have been putting the girls in tough situations, working on our resiliency and mental toughness, and tonight they showed they have a lot of fight in them and they aren't going to back down from any challenge. I am so proud of them for being able to stay level-headed and pull off a great win tonight.”
• 8th Grade B — In another three-setter, it was Hutch that came away the winner.
MMS won the first set 25-16, but Hutch came back for 25-23, 16-14 wins to hand MMS its first loss of the year after six wins.
“The first set we served the ball well and were aggressive on the net,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “In the second and third set, we lost our focus and got frustrated with our errors.”
• 7th Grade A — Hutchinson came away with 25-11 and 25-14 victories.
“I feel like this was a winnable game for us and at times we seemed in it,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We struggled to find energy and gain momentum. We made too many bad decisions and didn't move our feet. Hutch tipped and sent us several free balls and we did not take advantage of that. On the positive, our serving continues to improve.”
• 7th Grade B — Hutchinson rolled to 25-8 and 25-9 successes.
“The girls seemed to hit a wall in today's matches,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “We missed too many serves and let too many balls drop. Once we were down it was hard for us to gain any momentum to get back up.”
Both seventh-grade teams are 0-7.
