SALINA — McPherson’s seventh-grade B-volleyball team recorded its first win of the season during the Salina South Invitational on Saturday.
The win was a 25-14, 25-14 decision over Salina Lakewood. MMS was 1-3 on the day, losing to Maize South (10-25), Hutchinson (11-25) and Newton (in three sets).
“We started off the tournament really rocky playing two very talented teams,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “Maize South and Hutchinson had some great servers that we couldn't seem to get past. We let too many balls hit the floor and our communication wasn't great.”
But Bradstreet liked what she saw against Salina Lakewood.
“We turned it around when we played Salina Lakewood and got our first win of the season,” she said. “We had great serves, passes and were able to get some kills during the match which led us to our win. We played Newton for fifth and sixth place and ended up losing in 3 sets. I have full confidence in the girls and know they can compete with Newton, we just let too many balls hit the floor. The girls stayed positive throughout the games and it was fun to watch them earn their first win. I'm proud of how they came together as a team today and stayed in good spirits even through the tough losses at the beginning of the tournament. We are getting better every match we play and we look forward to seeing some of these same teams throughout the rest of our season.”
