According to various Twitter posts and confirmed by McPherson High coach Chris Strathman, Bullpup senior basketball standout Mandi Cooks has made an oral commitment to the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Cooks has been a three-year standout for the Bullpups, including numerous All-State and All-League honors. She scored 20 points in last year’s Class 4A Division I state championship game against Miege as the Bullpups finished second in the state.

The 6-1 Cooks, however, is expected to miss much or perhaps all of her senior season after suffering a torn Achilles while playing in a tournament this summer in Texas. She subsequently had surgery and is recovering.

Cooks also was a volleyball standout for the Bullpups and during her sophomore year was the Class 4A state champion in the high jump, securing a spot on MHS Wall of Fame following graduation.

Of note, McPherson High graduate and former Kansas Mr. Basketball Steve Henson is the men’s coach at UTSA.
