MMS netters still perfect in duals

MAIZE — McPherson Middle School’s girls tennis team ended an exhaustive three-event week with a 14-5 dual victory over Maize South on Thursday.

“The hour-long ride to Maize South in a hot bus made it a challenge for us to get going with a lot of energy,” MMS coach Ricardo Sanchez said. “We actually had to have Loghan Engelbrecht sit out because she wasn't feeling well after the trip. At the huddle before the matches started I could see a lot of players in a bit of a daze and I tried to pump them up. I told them the goal was just stick to fundamentals, think about how the wind was blowing and fight for every point. The girls seemed to pick it up as most doubles matches went very quickly. I could see the strain of such a long week, as most girls were playing their ninth and 10th matches in half a week.”

The Bullpups have another grinder of a week coming up.

“We have another busy week with two duals and an all-day tournament next week followed by the Pioneer League Tournament on Oct. 2nd,” Sanchez said. “The girls will rest up this weekend and come out ready to go next week as I know they are eager for more success.”

MMS has not lost a dual match this season.
