NEWTON — So much for a Rose Hill hangover.

McPherson High’s volleyball team, coming off a disheartening loss on Tuesday to the No. 1-ranked Rockets, went 5-1 on Saturday to take second place in the seven-team Newton Round-Robin Invitational.

The only loss came to Newton, which was 6-0 and dropped only one set, that coming against the Bullpups.

MHS started with a solid 25-15, 25-20 win over Andover Central before losing a tough three-setter to Newton after winning the first set 25-22. The Railers bounced back for 25-20 and 25-19 as they now have beaten the Bullpups twice this year.

MHS then sailed through the next four matches, losing only one set. It defeated Wichita Heights (25-17, 25-20), Goddard Eisenhower (25-17, 25-20), Andale (25-13, 25-20) and Salina South (25-18, 21-25, 25-16). Against Andale, the Bullpups were down 10 points before storming back.

MHS had three players on the All-Tournament Team, sophomore Cassie Cooks, junior Jaycee Burghart and senior Elle Barrett. Newton’s Taylor Antonowich was named the tourney MVP and was one of three Railers on the team.

The Bullpups are now 16-4 and head to Augusta on Tuesday in a tri that also includes El Dorado. Next Saturday the team competes in another tournament as it heads north to Spring Hill.
