When McPherson High’s volleyball team walked off the Roundhouse court last Tuesday after being ambushed by defending Class 4A Division I state champion Rose Hill, it was somewhat shaken emotionally.

Coach Christy Doile said at the time her team had to flush the bad memory from its mind, considering a top field of teams awaited the Bullpups in Saturday’s Newton Invitational.

But other than a three-set loss to Newton, it was close to a perfect day for the Bullpups as they took second in the round-robin event with a 5-1 record.

“It was a good weekend and a positive response from Tuesday,” Doile said. “After our Rose Hill match we worked on our hitting placement and strategy, blocking technique, digging tougher balls and most importantly how we need to react or respond during a tough match or team.”

The Newton match was the second of the day and MHS lost after winning the first set. But then the Bullpups stormed back with four straight wins, though it needed three sets to fend off underdog Salina South, leaving the Cougars winless on the day.

“Last match of the day, we were out of gas for sure,” Doile said. “We went three sets with Salina South. Thankfully we put the energy back on the court to win that last set.”

Bullpups Elle Barrett, Cassie Cooks and Jaycee Burghart were on the All-Tournament Team.

“Barrett is six rotations, just so consistent, we can count on her to put great swings on the ball,” Doile said. “Cooks hits with a very heavy arm, just has a super powerful swing. Burghart, our playmaker, has stepped up her game by getting more kills on her dumps and getting some really big blocks against big hitters. Someone I thought really played well and deserved some attention this weekend was Andrea Sweat. She led us in hitting percentage. She scored us a ton of points with her attacks and blocks. I was proud of her for really taking what we worked on at practice and actively applied to the matches. In result, she increased her stats and scored more points for us.”
