AUGUSTA — There was no messing around for the McPherson High volleyball team on Tuesday as it improved to 18-4 with a sweep of Augusta and El Dorado.

Augusta put up a much better fight against MHS compared to when the teams played at the Roundhouse, but MHS still was a straight-sets 25-22, 25-14 winner. MHS then defeated El Dorado 25-18 25-17.

“Augusta came ready to play in comparison to our home match last week,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “We were able to fight through our mistakes and battle through a team that was giving full effort in set 1. Set 2 we jumped out ahead and were in control of that set. El Dorado, we again fought through our mistakes and were able to win.”

The Bullpups were coming off a 5-1 performance at Newton over the weekend and perhaps weren’t quite as focused as they played a top level in the tourney.

“We weren't as sharp as we were this weekend,” Doile said. “We've got some physical skills we need to fix or get back to where they were over the weekend. (Andrea) Sweat had a another nice night at the net and Mickey (Bowers) was exceptionally good on serve receive.”

Elle Barrett and Sweat led in kills with 23 and 14, respectively. Jaycee Burghart ran the offense to the tune of 45 assists, while Bailea Crist and Bowers hustled to 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Sweat led in blocks with 3 and Meghan Smith had 2 aces.

MHS is back in tournament action this weekend when it travels to Spring Hill.

It was a 2-0 night for the JVs as well as the Bullpups defeated Augusta (28-26, 25-16) and El Dorado (25-14, 25-20).
