NEWTON — Natalie Hedlund’s 11th-place finish highlighted McPherson High’s varsity performances on Saturday in the Newton Invitational Cross Country Meet.

It was a tough event as the MHS girls took eighth and the boys were 13th.

But Bullpup coach Aspen Lott saw some good things from her young team.

“Overall I think we did pretty solid from the boys and girls side today,” she said. “Smashed a lot of PRs (personal records) and season bests. There was a lot of good competition at Newton today, in which pushed us to drop our times. We will see Buhler and Wamego at regionals. We needed a meet like this before regionals. Very proud of our kids today.”

Maggie Leaf turned in an eighth-place effort in the JV race.
