TOWANDA — McPherson High’s volleyball team tuned up for this Saturday’s McPherson Invitational by defeating a pair of AVCTL Division III opponents on Tuesday to improve to 25-4 on the season.

The Circle match was supposed to be the tougher of the two, but the Bullpups were at the top of their game with 25-11, 25-20 wins.

“Set 1 we were in charge and played well,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “Set 2 Circle played much better and we fought back to win.”

Arch-rival Buhler got up for the Bullpups, taking them to three sets. After MHS lost the first set 19-25, it calmed the waters with 25-14, 25-16 wins.

“We were flat and had too many errors set 1,” Doile said. “We were back to normal set 2 and 3. It wasn't our best night out and we are happy to walk away with two wins. (Andrea) Sweat and (Cassie) Cooks held us steady out of the middle. (Jaycee) Burghart played well. Mickey (Bowers) was good on receive as always. (Elle) Barrett came up with some timely hits.”

Barrett led in kills with 32, followed by Cooks (16) and Sweat (14). Burghart rang up 58 assists, while Barrett was tops in aces (4). Bowers (21), Bailea Crist (13) and Burghart (11) were the dig leaders. Sweat’s 3 blocks were tops.

The MHS JVs were 1-1 on the night, winning a three-setter from Circle (20-25, 25-21, 25-23) before losing to Buhler (19-25, 23-25).
