Tyler Brown said the ultimate goal never changes for his McPherson High girls tennis team, which competes on Friday and Saturday in a Class 4A regional at Lindsborg.
“If we play to our potential I feel we can definitely get all six girls to Pratt (site of state),” said Brown, whose Bullpups have been a Top 5 team throughout his head coaching career. “Our goal is to win the regional as a team and to get six girls to state.”
But this has been somewhat of a rebuilding year for Brown, whose team produced the state doubles champions last year in then-seniors Ellea Ediger and Rachel Ivers. Maisie Edmonson, seventh in the state in singles last year, has been the team leader.
Other teams in the field are Abilene, Buhler, Chapman, Clay Center, Concordia, Hays, Larned, Nickerson and the host Smoky Valley.
“Every team will compete,” he said. “It seems like everyone has a doubles team or a singles player or two that has a chance to qualify, but I feel we are one of the teams that does have the depth to get everyone in.”
Brown did not disclose how he’ll set his lineup, but the Bullpups are coming off a good stretch in the last week as they were second in their own tournament last Saturday and then placed third on Monday in the AVCTL Division III-IV Tournament that featured many players who will make the state quarterfinals, semifinals or finals next week — as well as the probable 4A team champion Wichita Collegiate.
Besides Edmonson, two other Bullpups have state experience. Taylor Bruce was ninth in doubles last year with the departed Heidi Myers, while Rachel Carlson was 12th in singles.
