A nice mix of big-school and small-school volleyball powers will gather at the Roundhouse on Saturday for the annual McPherson Invitational, which starts at 8 a.m.
A highlight of the day is that MHS will be honoring its 2012 state championship team between the finish of pool play and the start of bracket play.
The 10-team tournament is top-heavy, with Goddard (22-2), MHS (25-4), Nickerson (24-4), Garden Plain (15-7) and Carroll (13-8) all worthy contenders. Nickerson just handed Class 3A’s top team Kingman its first loss of the year last weekend.
“We have a strong Top 5 for sure,” MHS coach Christy Doile said. “A good team will get left out of the Final Four.”
MHS is in a pool with Nickerson, Junction City (8-13), Hillsboro (7-12) and Salina South (5-25).
Goddard, Garden Plain and Carroll are joined by Hutchinson (10-19) and Lyons (8-18).
“Goddard has a really great season so far, one of the best they've had in the last five years,” Doile said. “Carroll went to a big tournament in the East, with several private schools and picked up five quality losses, which put a dent in their record. They are better than their record indicates.”
Doile said the Bullpups probably got a good draw since Carroll won’t be in their bracket.
MHS’ first match is against Salina South, followed by Hillsboro, and that should give the Bullpups a chance to get off to a good start. Junction City and Nickerson round out the order.
