It was a long day for the McPherson Middle School volleyball teams here Monday, including rare losses for the eighth-grade teams.

• 8th Grade A — Maize South handed the Bullpups their first loss of the year as MMS dropped 19-25, 21-25 decisions to see its 14-match winning streak snapped.

“Maize South is a well-disciplined team that plays very smart,” MMS coach Jacque Colgrove said. “They were able to take advantage of our errors. Each team tonight went on multiple runs, but unfortunately we fell behind by too much at the wrong time and couldn't finish the match. The girls played tough, but had too many mistake that hurt us: nine missed serves and one rotation error. We will look to bounce back from tonight and be ready to play Goddard Eisenhower on Thursday for our last regular-season match.”

• 8th Grade B — Maize South was a 25-17, 25-23 winner as MMS lost for just the third time against 16 wins.

“Maize South was a very good team,” Bullpup coach Aimee McDaniel said. “Our girls played well, but struggled passing their aggressive serves. The first set, we had one rotation that we couldn't get out of and lost our confidence. We were able to bounce back for the second set and played them close.”

• 7th Grade A — After being routed 25-6 in set 1, the Bullpups roared back for a 25-22 victory to force a third set, which was won by South, 15-11.

“We had too many unforced errors and were intimidated by Maize South's serving in the first set,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We got off to a 7-0 start in set 2 and our level of play improved tremendously. I was so proud of the way the girls stepped it up and and refused to quit, even when Maize South started to string some points together. While we weren't able to finish with a win, I thought we showed some mental toughness in the third set. We came back from being down eight and kept fighting. Mental toughness is something we have lacked at times this season, so I was pleased with that effort. We continue to struggle with consistent serving, which will be a focus for us as we prepare for Thursday and Saturday.”

• 7th Grade B — After taking South into overtime before losing 26-24, the Bullpups were defeated 25-8.

“The girls looked really good in the first set tonight,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “I am so proud of them and how they came together as a team at the start of the games. They were passing the ball well and making some good plays at the net. Maize South had some great servers that we just couldn’t get past in the second set. This slowed our momentum and we never could get back in the game. Overall the girls should be very proud of how they performed tonight against such a talented team.”
