Central Christian College’s men’s soccer team exploded for three second-half goals to get past Texas Wesleyan 3-1 here Thursday, the Tigers’ first-ever win in the Sooner Athletic Conference, which they joined this season.
Tiger goals were by Gabriel Flores, Joshua Taylor and Jayke Maples. Taylor and Omar Salgado had assists.
“I thought that the game was interesting because Texas Wesleyan is really good, and their record is not an accurate picture of their ability,” CCC coach Aaron Hoxie said. “They've got some real quality over there, and I think this factored into our mentality, but ultimately we were just flat. However, as good as they were, they also played themselves out of the contest by picking up a silly red card 20 minutes in."
Brian Silva was the winner in goal.
Central improved to 8-3-1 overall and is 1-2-1 in the conference. The Tigers host Mid-America Christian on Saturday, with starting time 11 a.m.
• TEXAS WESLEYAN WOMEN 2, CENTRAL 1, OT — The Tiger women just can’t seem to catch a break as they play everybody tough and have little to show for it.
The Rams, one of the best teams in the SAC, got off to a 1-0 lead, but Central tied it in the 63rd minute on a goal by Isabel Sierra, assisted by Rachel Meier.
The Rams won the game in OT despite a great effort by Central goalie Goldie Bougher, who had 8 saves.
Central is now 3-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play. It hosts Mid-America Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday.
