McPherson’s seventh-grade football team completed a winning season here Thursday with a 32-8 rout of Valley Center.
The Bullpups finished the year 4-3.
“Our guys came out and closed the season with an impressive win,” MMS coach Brandt Busse said. “They were unstoppable on the offensive side of the ball, rushing for well over 100 yards and passing for almost 100 yards. (Jayton) Gumm ran the ball extremely well, compiling three touchdowns on the ground, each over 30 yards. There were many other great individual efforts in this game, but the team effort is what propelled them to the win. Our line on the both sides of the ball really came alive this game. Defensively, Valley Center could not move the ball. As a coaching staff we couldn't have been more proud of our guys.”
MMS started 3-0, then lost three in a row before closing strong.
“We knew at the beginning of the season we had a very talented group of young men,” Busse said. “We started the season strong and then lost a few close ones. I was proud of the way the guys battled and did not let those losses affect them. This team has a ton of potential and I am excited to see them play next year. I believe if they work hard and continue to be cohesive as a team they will accomplish great things. As a coaching staff we were impressed by how well they gelled together. There was not one selfish player on this team and they always had each others backs. It will be fun to watch them as they continue to grow.”
In addition to three scores by Gumm (35, 40 and 35 yards), Hunter Alvord fired a 30-yard TD pass to Sam Becker and Becker threw a scoring pass himself to Mason Miller covering 35 yards. Tucker Pelnar had a 2-point conversion.
