EL DORADO — McPherson High’s ninth-grade volleyball team finished its season with a 24-9 record after taking fifth place in the AVCTL Tournament on Saturday.
“Our final weekend tournament was not the ending we had hoped for, however the girls gave it their all,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said.
The Bullpups lost in the opening round to Hutchinson (17-25, 22-25).
“We had some sickness, which required us to change our entire rotation,” Fitzmorris said. “Taylor Casebeer and Hope Wehrman stepped up to run the setting for the day. I also moved Olivia Morgan into a hitting position after being our libero most of the season and she held her own on the front line. We played really well, but it was not enough to beat Hutch.”
MHS then lost to Maize., losing 14-25 and 17-25 verdicts.
“Our athletes had a hard time adjusting to the new rotation as well as rebounding from making errors,” Fitzmorris said.
MHS lost its third straight match as it defeated Campus in set 1 25-17, but the Colts came back for 25-9, 25-8 decisions.
The Bullpups broke through for a 23-25, 25-5, 15-12 over Newton and then won by forfeit over Derby, which left the gym.
“Overall we finished 24-9. A great season for the freshman,” Fitzmorris said.
