HESSTON — Hesston High football coach Tyson Bauerle says that undefeated Conway Springs, which hosts his Swathers on Saturday in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs, lines up and dares you to stop them.

It will be old-school football at its best as the 10-0 Cardinals line up in their single-wing offense and run it play after play after play.

“They are a heavy run team,” said Bauerle, whose team takes a 7-3 record into the 7 p.m. game. “In fact, they've only attempted 15 passes all year long (excluding 2-pt conversions, which they throw often). They run their single-wing offense very well. They have size up front and a couple speedy running backs. It'll be a fun test for our defense. Defensively, they are able to be a little multiple with varying 4-3 and 3-4 looks.”

Conway Springs scored 98 points in its season opener and has been over 50 points in seven of its 10 games.

The Swathers have had some anxious moments on defense, but may have found themselves in the 47-6 first-round rout of Trinity Catholic.

“As a team we were really clicking well early in the game and jumped out to a nice lead at halftime,” Bauerle said.  “We didn't really give Trinity a chance to gain any momentum early in the game, which was a huge key after we started so well. It was nice to be in an opportunity to really work on some key aspects on offense and defense that we've focused on and then rest the starters toward the end of the game. Once again, our offensive line had a very solid game. They've really taken great steps over the last few weeks in practice and that has translated into some great games offensively.”

The Swathers also have to overcome the Cardinals’ tradition as they have been a longtime power.

“Conway Springs is having a tremendous season,” Bauerle said. “In most games, they haven't even been challenged. We look forward to doing our best in changing that on Saturday.”

The winner takes on the survivor of a what should be a donnybrook between Phillipsburg and Hoisington. Phillipsburg is undefeated at 10-0 and Hoisington is 7-3.
