MAIZE — McPherson’s eighth-grade boys basketball A-team survived its first road test of the year Thursday, outlasting Maize South 31-23 in a low-scoring affair.
Jayden Dukes led MMS, now 2-0, with 11 points.
The B-team, in its first appearance of the season, lost 39-18. Xavier Sutherlin’s 5 points led the way.
“I felt after Game One versus Goddard I gave a lot of high praise about our how athletic and how big we are,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “Thank goodness we have those attributes because our low basketball IQ showed tonight. We were lucky to win the A-game on athleticism and sheer effort alone. That was the one positive. We have great effort, we just have to trust the system offensively and defensively. Our B-guys were not so fortunate. Hopefully learning our playbook and willingness to be coached will happen sooner than later otherwise it could turn into a long season.”
MMS is home Monday to take on Goddard Eisenhower.
MMS A (31) — Dukes 11, Madron 9, Ruddle 6, Buckbee 3, Brooks 2.
MMS B (18) — Sutherlin 5, Mattox 4, Jones 4, Gibbs 2, Cruzen 2, James 1.
