EL DORADO — McPherson High's boys barely scratched the surface of their vast potential on Friday in their basketball season opener against El Dorado.

Just think what will happen when they hit on all cylinders.

The Wildcats popped MHS with a 5-0 lick to start the game and thoughts of an upset filled the air for their fans for all of 2 minutes.

The Bullpups responded with a 21-5 sizz and then flashed their considerable promise the rest of the game for an easy 82-38 victory.

Despite some choppy play at times, the Bullpups were comfortably up 44-19 at the half as the Big 3 of Mason Alexander, Ben Pyle and Jake Alexander scored 40 of the points, with Mason Alexander especially en fuego with 18, making three 3-pointers.

Pyle would go on to finish with 24 points, Mason Alexander added 20 and Jake Alexander furnished 16.

"The problem is they handled it just well enough that our pressure was not creating turnovers and then we'd get a little impatient and sell out and give them a lane to the basket," MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said of his team's slow start. "Then we did make some steals and got to the point where we were trying to steal everything instead of being solid. You can develop some bad habits, but overall for the first game it was all right."

Jarin Koehler, only a junior, scored 23 points to carry the El Dorado offense and got to the foul line 13 times, making 10.

The MHS JVs were impressive in their opener with a 65-39 victory behind 14 points by Cody Stufflebean, while Kyler Hoppes and Gabe Hoover chipped with 10 apiece.

In the ninth-grade game, the Bullpups rode a 26-point outburst by Jaytin Alexander for a 64-27 victory. Eli Pyle furnished 14 points and Aaron Powell chipped in with 13.

The Bullpups have a major test coming up on Tuesday when No. 4 Derby (Class 6A) comes to town for their home opener. Derby has added four transfers, including last year's No. 1 scorer in the state Tyler Brown, who was at Valley Center last year.
