EL DORADO — There's a lot of games where McPherson High girls coach Chris Strathman would gladly take 61 points.

The Bullpups did that in a half in their season opener on Friday against El Dorado.

MHS made an amazing 15 of 18 shots in the first quarter to sprint to a 38-7 lead and even when Strathman went to his deep bench, the Bullpups didn't miss a beat as they led 61-17 at the break.

The game eventually went into running clock at the start of the fourth quarter and MHS completed a 95-24 victory as it tuned up for Tuesday's mega-showdown with Derby at the Roundhouse.

Reigning Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year Taylor Robertson missed her initial shot, but then made her next nine to score 22 points in the half and then played sparingly in the second half to finish with 31. She was 13 of 18 from the field as she was remarkably efficient.

"Our girls know when she's open to get her the ball," Strathman said. "She definitely had a few good looks that she knocked down."

Riley Hett, who was 4 of 4 in the first quarter, finished the game 6 of 7 from the field and scored 17 points.

"We obviously shot the ball well from the perimeter," Strathman said as his team drained 11 treys on the night. "We did a good job of sharing the basketball."

Strathman liked the fact that every player who got into the game made a contribution as depth is definitely going to be a strength.

There was a combined JV-C game and the Bullpups had great ball movement in a 76-27 rout.

Emma Ruddle’s 21 points led MHS, while Jaycee Burghart tallied 11, and Maggie Leaf  and Kassidy Beam tallied 10 apiece.

The Bullpups now prepare for the monster showdown on Tuesday when they make their home debut against Derby, last year's Class 6A runner-up and a team that returns 90 percent of its scoring from last year. Kennedy Brown, a 6-6 junior, is ranked by one service as the No. 15 junior in the country.
