MAIZE — It’s no fluke.

McPherson High’s boys swimming team completed a spectacular first week as it followed up its season-opening win at Newton on Thursday with a runaway victory on Saturday in the Maize Invitational.

And the Bullpups weren’t even at full strength as they were missing solid contributor Matthew Powers.

MHS scored 401 points to lap second-place Maize South (282), while Andover Central was third (276). The 11-team field was mostly 6A and 5A schools.

“Our top swimmers really had a good meet and held up their spots from the first meet,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “This meet scored the top relay and then up to four places in individual events. The big difference for us this year is our two, three and, in this meet, the four spot swimmers are swimming really well and scoring up a spot or two from last year. I told the guys after the first meet that we aren't flying under the radar anymore, that teams will be gunning for us so we have to stay focused and really keep working in practice. Excited to see how we stack up Tuesday (at Topeka).”

The Bullpups got off to a flying start with a first and fourth in the 200 medley relay.

Other wins came from Justus Hampton in the 200 free and Will Powers in the 200 individual medley and 100 free, with Powers breaking his own school record in the 200 IM.
