McPherson High graduate Austin Eldredge made a triumphant return home Friday night.
Eldredge, who won the 138-pound state championship for McPherson High last year, is now a freshman at Cloud County Community College, which came to McPherson on Friday to take on Central Christian College in the Tigers’ first-ever home dual.
His match at 149 was supposed to be the match of the night as CCC’s Devontae Fitzgerald was a national qualifier last year.
But Eldredge, who holds the Kansas record for T-falls, did just that against Fitzgerald with an 18-1 win.
That helped the T-Birds to a 40-18 victory. All of Central’s points came by forfeit.
Cloud had five other wins by pins and received a forfeit.
“As a team we have been making steps, but Cloud came in and dictated a lot of what happened on the mat,” Central coach Tom Carr said. “They should be commended for competing hard. We will take the lessons from this to better prepare and get better.”
Central goes to Benedictine on Thursday, with the match in Gardner.
