MHS wrestlers have great weekend at Colby

COLBY — After Thursday’s double dual with Chapman and Smoky Valley, McPherson High wrestling coach Doug Kretzer remarked how he knew he had a good dual team.

He might want to punch up his adjective a bit. The Bullpups were better than good over the weekend.

MHS was one victory away from perhaps being the best team in the Colby Dual Tournament, going 6-1, though technically it finished in fourth.

“We went after everyone we wrestled,” said Kretzer, whose team is now 9-1. “It was fun to watch these kids go relentlessly attack the opposition over the last three days. Everyone was pulling and working as a team in every dual. We were looking for bonus points and falls with the lead, and doing that opposite if we were behind. That’s the sign of a good team.”

The Bullpups’ Rhett Edmonson at 120 and Scott Radke at 152 enjoyed perfect weekends as both won all seven of their matches. Going 6-1 were Landon Crews at 113, Jonah Clarke at 145 and Bailey Yarborough at 195.

The Bullpups’ finish was their highest in their history in this tournament.

MHS’ wins were against Hays (52-18), Eaglecrest (Colo.) 66-6, Tonganoxie (39-30), Blue Valley North (76-6), Lexington (Neb.) 54-24 and Colby (44-26). The lone loss was to eventual tourney champion Valley Center (45-33), which came in pool matches.

“When you make one of the Top 2 placement divisions you know you’re going to have your hands full as a team,” Kretzer said. “The last two matches are going to be against very tough teams without holes in their lineups. Everyone knows there will be no easy matches in those last two matches.”

MHS’ Luke Thompson received the tournament award for the most falls in the least amount of time in the Bullpups’ pool.

The Bullpups have another huge dual coming up on Thursday when they travel to Buhler.
