McPherson’s seventh-grade A-boys were edged 43-41 by Derby North here Monday, dropping the Bullpups to 2-3 on the basketball season.
Hunter Alvord’s 17 points went for naught as he led the Bullpups.
“My remarks are gonna’ sound like a broken record, but we battled, competed and left everything out on the floor,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “Sadly we once again, we as a team, made too many mistakes to leave with the ‘W’. In seventh grade we don't expect these young men to be fully polished and give us perfect games, just as long as we are learning from those mistakes so that by Thursday, season's end, and/or freshmen year we're not making the same ones then that's our No. 1 goal. The way these guys compete, the wins will come. I was very pleased with our efforts on the free throw line and defensively, especially in some critical moments.”
Derby North won the B-game 37-23 despite 7 points by MMS’ Jordan Bena.
“We were right in this thing at halftime,” Burghart said. “After the half we had a little drop in intensity and weren't ever able to fully get it back. I hope that we're ready to bring our very best effort over the next couple of days to start getting some things turned around.”
