HUTCHINSON — McPherson’s seventh-grade boys outlasted Hutchinson in a pair of close, thrilling basketball games on Thursday.
The A-team held on for a 39-38 victory behind 15 points by Hunter Alvord.
“We still have some trouble closing out games,” said MMS coach Eric Burghart, whose team leveled its record at 3-3. “We had a couple of very comfortable leads throughout this game and then we let one bad turnover turn into one missed box out and then one bad call turns into no help side help, so we'll continue to work on limiting ourselves to one mistake, having a short memory and moving on. I was very proud of the way we came out ready to get after it on the boards and then reward ourselves by running the floor to get some easier buckets. My favorite player of this game was Jaret Myers. I love the way this kid invests in his defensive responsibility. He defends with a relentless attack and it is so much fun to watch.”
The B-team needed overtime for a 31-28 victory. Jaytin Gumm had a huge game with 17 points.
“We had an exciting overtime win with this group,” Burghart said. “We were behind most of the game, but rallied back and overcame in OT. Jaytin Gumm has shown all season he is our go-to on the offensive side, but today what set him apart was his defense that created a couple of easy buckets for us. I also really enjoyed how aggressive our guards were attacking the rim tonight, especially (Jordan) Bena, (Layne) Graves and (Roman) Mai. Bena additionally did a great job of organizing on the floor for some of his less experienced teammates and for a coach, that type of player is invaluable.”
