TRUILLO ALTO, Puerto Rico — The streak is over.
After 12 straight losses, many of them coming in the final minutes, the McPherson College men’s basketball team got back into the win column on Sunday with a 65-52 victory over Universidad del Sagrado Corazon.
It didn’t look good early as Sagrado started the game on a 7-0 run, but the Bulldogs finally got their legs under them and dominated the rest of the first half, leading 29-17.
Mac maintained the lead in the second half, even though it didn’t shoot the ball particularly well. However, it grabbed 7 more rebounds, finishing with a 42-35 advantage.
“It feels great to get a win," Mac coach Tim Swartzendruber said as his team is now 2-13 on the season. "Our defensive effort was super the entire game. I'm extremely proud of our team. We have had some tough losses recently and today we refused to lose. Hopefully, it is the start of a streak."
Freshman Jeffrey Oxford came up big with a career-high 13 points, matched by Louis Parker III, who also had 7 rebounds. Both players came off the bench as the Mac subs combined for 30 of the team’s 65 points.
Grant Raleigh also was in double figures with 12 points. Leading scorer Aaron Bachura was the focal point of Sagrado’s defense as he was held to 5.
The Bulldogs will try to finish their trip 2-0 as they play again today against the University of Puerto Rico at Carolina. Tip time is 5:00 CST.
