McPherson’s eighth-grade A-girls seldom lose, but when they do it’s close.
The Bullpups lost for only the second time this season in seven games, a 28-24 setback here Monday to Salina Central. MMS’ two losses are by a total of 5 points.
Ella Schmid led a balanced offense with 7 points.
“The A-team was in a tight game throughout the night and continued to fight back and make plays when we needed them,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Lakewood was a very good team and came in undefeated and we had them, but were not able to hold on at the end. Ella Schmid made two big back-to-back 3-point shots that put us in a good position. Those shots gave us a huge lift. We just did not hold on in overtime. Lauren Labertew scored all 4 of our overtime points and we just could not get good looks in the overtime period to help her. Those two losses this group have had will make us a better team and to see them fight was really nice.”
The B-team was a 30-19 winner behind 9 points by Kori Courtney.
“Once again our B-team created several turnovers, which led to several easy baskets,” Crawford said. “This group continues to play good defense and are often rotating to the correct spots to make it difficult for teams to run their offense, They are only giving up 10 points per game. Our B-team will go into the break with a 6-1 record. We are proud of the effort they have given.”
