McPherson High’s wrestling team will honor longtime MAC Wrestling coach Lance Engel during its home match on Thursday as the No. 8-ranked Bullpups return to action hosting Circle in the Auxiliary Gym.
Mat time is 6 p.m. It also will be Senior Night as the Bullpups have only two home matches this season, the other having taken place last month.
Engel’s contributions to local wrestling are immeasurable. It’s been the feeder program for the last three decades for the high school and middle school programs.
The Bullpups are 10-1 in dual matches. The T-Birds aren’t expected to be overly strong, but MHS coach Doug Kretzer is hoping they can fill most of the weights. He noted that Circle was open at a couple of weights in its match before Christmas against Augusta.
The Bullpups have been off since wrestling in the Abilene Invitational, then the team had to take off a week per KSHSAA rules.
“The holidays are tough to practice and improve, lots of kids gone for family events,” Kretzer said. “The kids who were in town have worked hard and will be ready to go Thursday.”
This is a busy week for the Bullpups as they jump right back into action with a JV meet Friday at Concordia, then the varsity boys and girls are both at Burlington on Saturday.
