McPherson’s seventh-grade boys won and lost in basketball games against Salina South here Monday.
The A-team is now 3-5 after a 50-21 loss, despite 8 points by Jaytin Gumm.
“There are plenty of excuses we could make from boys being gone or sick but we won’t,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “A loss is a loss and I can live with losing if we're competing and learning. The score clearly shows that we didn't do either of those things tonight. A bright spot was Jaytin Gumm, who was an instant spark off the bench and showed why he deserves much more playing time. We look forward to getting healthy and getting back after it on Thursday (at Newton).”
The B-team salvaged the split 32-24 behind 7 points by Roman Mai. The win evened the Bullpups’ record at 4-4.
“This group has found a really nice rhythm,” Burghart said. “We're able to go deeper and deeper into our bench with better and better understanding of the game, plays, etc.. If we can keep this momentum rolling then it can really set these boys up for success in the future. Roman Mai has been outstanding lately, whether it be in practice or in games, he's becoming a go-to player and we have been loving his output.”
