Swede women, Pope finish strong

NORTH NEWTON — Bethany College’s women went on the road Saturday to pick up an important KCAC basketball win, 66-56 against Bethel.

The Threshers were thinking upset, up 54-53, but Marissa Pope scored 12 points in the final 2:06 as the Swedes are now 7-5 in the KCAC, 11-8 overall, with a key road game coming up on Wednesday in McPherson. The Swedes lost to the Bulldogs in the first meeting at Lindsborg and are just a game up on Mac in the standings.

Pope finished with 16 points, second to the 19 by Lauren Welsch. Canton-Galva product Cassidy Enns furnished 13. Jade Brown led Bethel with 12.

• BETHEL MEN 101, BETHANY 75 — The Swedes were down as many as 36 as Bethel made 16 of 27 3-pointers.

Bethel was up 58-31 at the half as this was the worst performance of the year for Bethany which sank to 2-10 in the KCAC and 6-14 overall. It travels to McPherson on Wednesday and a Bulldog win would tie the teams at the bottom of the standings.

Tyler Larkin led Bethany with 14 points, one more than Isiah Saenz. Chase Banister led Bethel with 20.
