NEWTON — The Newton Tournament of Champions proved to be the major leagues of high school wrestling.

McPherson High’s No. 8-ranked Bullpups (Class 4A Division I) finished 17th out of 28 teams in a field that will be the best they face all year as it was loaded with the best teams in Classes 6A through 3A.

MHS wrestlers Scott Radke and Rhett Edmonson suffered their first losses of the season, albeit by close decisions. Radke wound up finishing fourth at 152 and Edmonson was seventh at 120, both going 3-2 on the weekend. Brynton Crews, at 138, was MHS’ other placer, taking seventh.

Valley Center won the meet with 184 1/2 points, followed by Arkansas City with 169 1/2. Derby was third with 142.

MHS scored 67 1/2 points, 1 1/2 behind Winfield, which MHS still has to compete against in dual action this year.

Radke’s first loss of the year came in the semifinals to Bubba Wilson of Manhattan, 3-2. His other loss came to Duwayne Villalpando of Maize in the third-place match, 4-3.

Edmonson’s first loss of the year came in the quarterfinals to Josh Paine of Andover Central, 3-2. He lost a 7-4 decision to Dallas Koelzer of Olathe South in the consolation round.

The Bullpups have more tournament action next week when they compete Friday and Saturday at Hays.
