Viking girls outlasted in first round at Sterling

STERLING — The top-seeded Sterling girls were given quite a push by Smoky Valley for a half on Wednesday in the first round of the Sterling Invitational.

The No. 8-seed Vikings trailed only 28-25 and it was still just a 6-point game going into the fourth quarter.

But Sterling finally shook loose, outscoring Smoky 18-6 for a 58-40 victory.

Amanda Behanna led the Vikings with 12 points. Smoky Valley plays at 3:00 today.

• Smoky Valley boys 62, Lyons 37 — In the consolation bracket, the Vikings outscored the Lions 31-9 over the middle two quarters to qualify for the fifth-place game.

Jacob Adams had a career-best 27 points to lead the Vikings, making 9 of 11 shots both from the field and the line.

Ben Weldy had a strong rebounding game with 10.

The Vikings play for fifth place at 4:30 Friday.
