Bishop Carroll was left out of the McPherson Invitational's pre-tournament favorite talk by the so-called experts.

But everybody was talking about the Golden Eagles after the tourney's opening game.

The Eagles, the No. 6 seed, played a near-perfect game to kick off the tournament with a foundation-shaking 76-63 stunner over No. 3-seed Derby.

Buoyed by a sensational first half, Carroll built up a 14-point lead, 41-27, on the strength of 59 percent shooting from the field and a whopping 10 assists as it dissected the Panthers’ defense, leaving Derby at 0-2 in the Roundhouse this year as it lost in December to the homestanding Bullpups.

Carroll then had no letdown to start the second half, rattling off 8 of the first 10 points as it continued to play with relentless intensity. The lead reached as many as 21, but Derby did finally cobble together a run, slicing the margin down to 8 before the Eagles reassumed command.

Luke Evans was dynamite in the first half for Carroll with 15 points and 7 rebounds before going on to finish with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while just missing a triple-double as he had 9 assists, part of the 21 the Eagles recorded. Carson Lee chipped in with 16 points, and Carsen Pracht and Gunner Lynch tallied 10 apiece. Amazingly, the Eagles shot 58 percent for the game, 32 of 55.

Tyler Brown, the Valley Center transfer, poured in 25 points to lead Derby. Bryant Mocaby added 11.

Carroll, now 6-4, moves on to the 6:30 semifinals on Friday against the winner of Lawrence Free State-Junction City. Derby, 5-4, goes up against the loser of that game at 3:00.
