McPherson’s eighth-grade A-girls improved to 7-2 here Thursday with a 43-27 win over Derby.
Peyton Howard tossed in 17 points and Emily Whorton had a big game as well with 11.
“We were only up by one point at the half and we talked at halftime about how we had to make plays for each other and we could only do that by competing every trip down the court,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Our defense was so much better in the second half and we held them to one shot and dominated the glass. By getting after it on defense, it allowed our offense to get going. The guards did a great job getting the ball inside in the second half and we finished shots so much better. It was nice to see Emily Whorton come out aggressive, we will need her to continue being aggressive and staying in attack mode. We outscored them in the second half 31 to 16.”
The B-team had 10 players score, led by Harper Smith with 9 points, as MMS swamped Derby, 57-7. The B-team is 8-1.
“It was nice to see so many players put some points on the board,” Crawford said. “We played very well and were able to run our sets so much better, which led to a lot of good looks and we shot the ball so much better. Always nice to see the ball go thru the basket. I really was proud of our effort on the defensive end as well.”
