DERBY — McPherson’s seventh-grade A-boys got back on track with a solid 44-19 rout of Derby on Thursday.
Dawson Feil had his best game with 12 points, one more than Hunter Alvord. MMS is now a game under .500 at 4-5.
“We needed a game like this one,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “We applied great ball pressure and forced Derby into some tough spots that created easy buckets for us. We also saw the ball fall through the hoop a few times, so I’m hoping both of those things can help garner some confidence in this group. We have a very tough game against Andover on Monday so we will have to play even better to have a similar result. As I mentioned earlier I was very pleased with our ball pressure as a group, but Hunter Alvord has committed himself defensively in practice and now in a game and if he can continue to defend at that level then it makes us much more dangerous.”
The B-team also is 4-5 after a 28-25 loss despite 8 points by Jordan Bena.
“This is one that we let get away,” Burghart said. “We had some bad turnovers by not simply catching the ball or trying to force it into a tight spot. Their 2-3 gave us fits down low and didn’t allow for our bigs to really get going. A willingness to focus more on our role on offense will be needed if we want to finish as strongly as we’re capable of. One player who we were very proud of was Mason Clark, who showed some tenacity on the boards and seemed to play with a snarl tonight which was fun to see.”
