LOST SPRINGS — It was basically a walkover for the Elyria Christian School boys on Thursday in the first round of the Centre Cougar Classic.

The Eagles crushed Peabody 67-10 and will have a rematch tonight with Rural Vista. The teams met last week at the Eagle Dome, with Elyria outlasting the Heat by 9.

“This game was one we wanted to focus on the little things,” said Elyria coach Zach Goodrich, whose Eagles remained perfect on the year. “We did a really good job of sharing the basketball. I believe we had 17 assists on 25 made field goals. We have really stressed becoming better passers since we see some zone night in and night out. I felt all the guys were trying to find the gaps in the zone, by penetrating or flashing into open spots.”

Tyler Huxman and Jacob Nelson led the Eagles with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the usual standouts played sparingly. Elyria was up 40-4 at the half.

• Herington girls 36, Elyria 35 — It was a heart-breaking loss for the Eagles, who play Peabody in today’s 4:00 game.

“We are still struggling scoring under the basket, but our defense should have been better,” ECS coach Greg Fields said. “Christin (Vetter) and Melea (Redenbaugh) did a nice job controlling the boards, and Bailey (Unruh) was pretty strong on both sides of the court.  Audra Boerger gave us a spark offensively in the fourth quarter to give us a chance.”

Redenbaugh and Unruh scored 10 points apiece.
