HILLSBORO — The Hesston High girls will play Clay Center for the championship today in the Trojan Classic.

The Swathers advanced on Friday with a 41-24 semifinal victory over Holcomb as Hesston coach Matt Richardson said he was excited by his team’s hardnosed defensive effort.

Once again it was the 1-2 punch of Elise Kaiser and Kailey Jo Ince that delivered the 1-2 knockout, Kaiser with 17 points and Ince with 16.

Richardson said Clay Center, a 4A school, will present a lot of challenges in 5:45 p.m. championship game today.

• Holcomb boys 71, Hesston 41 — The Swathers didn’t see this coming.

Tall-and-talented Holcomb jumped on Hesston early and never let up.

Swather coach Greg Raleigh said his team just never responded after getting down early and that Holcomb shot the lights out.

Reese Nebel led Hesston with 13.

The Swathers play the 4:00 game today against Sunrise Christian.
