STERLING — Nick Reinert’s steal and layup beat the buzzer and Hugoton on Friday in the fifth-place game of the Sterling Invitational.
Reinert’s feat, which was completed with 0.9 left on the clock, made Smoky Valley’s boys a 59-57 winner.
Reinert’s remarkable feat put the cap on a 26-point game, 23 of those in the second half. Smoky Valley had to rally from 11 points down as coach Doug Schneider said it was one of the best wins of the year.
Ben Weldy scored 13 and Jacob Adams added 10 as the Big 3 got it done for the Vikings.
The Smoky Valley girls won their first game of the year, defeating Hutchinson Trinity also on a last-second shot by Haven Sjogren. No other details were available. That gave the Vikings seventh place.
