It was one of the most highly anticipated fifth-place games in the history of the McPherson Invitational.

If nothing else, the matchup between Derby and Wichita North promised to be entertaining considering both teams liked to play at warped speed.

They didn’t disappoint.

The first quarter was a harbinger of things to come as the Panthers edged ahead 26-24 and the track meet was on.

Derby began to assume command in the second half and wound up outscoring the Redskins 87-75 as the frenetic pace finally slowed down as both teams played themselves to near exhaustion.

Tyler Brown and Bryant Mocaby fired in 25 points apiece to lead the Panthers, while Tre Washington added 12 and Grant Adler scored 11. The Panthers shot 52 percent from the floor and drained 19 of 21 at the line.

Peyton Hatter was on fire for North with 30 points and Ty Butner added 23. Freshman phenom Jackie Johnson III was constantly dogged by two defenders, forcing him to pass off and he still scored 19, 17 in the first half. He turned it over 10 times as he was the focus of the Derby defense.

Johnson III’s 80 tournament points tied him with McPherson High’s Christian Ulsaker for fifth place for points in a tournament.

Hatter finished with a double-double as he also pulled down 11 rebounds.
