If there were any concerns about a Shawnee Mission East letdown after Friday’s emotionally draining loss to McPherson High in the semifinals of the McPherson Invitational — and that the Lancers wouldn’t be fully engaged in Saturday’s third-place game — those fears were put to rest early.

The Lancers exploded for a 25-13 first-quarter lead and lived off that advantage the rest of the game to hand Lawrence Free State — the No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A — its second loss in 24 hours, 71-56.

SM East sizzled from the field in the first half, though its 13-point lead at one point was shaved to six, 37-31 by halftime. The Lancers pushed it out to double digits in the second half — as many as 15 — and despite numerous rushes by the Firebirds, East came away with the third-place medals.

Zane Meeks had another monster game for East with a double-double, 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jack Schoemann added 17, Noah Kurlbaum tallied 13 and Kelyn Bolton supplied 10. For the second straight game the Lancers shot it at 56 percent from the field.

Garrett Luinstra led the Firebirds with 19 and Simon McCaffrey tallied 12 as they went 1-2 for the three days after entering 5-1. The Lions were without big man Jalan Robinson, who was on a recruiting trip to Western Illinois.
