GREAT BEND — Little River’s girls, the No. 2 seed, opened play in the Hilltop Classic on Monday with a 48-39 victory over Ell-Saline.
The triumph propels the Redskins into Thursday’s 6:15 p.m. semifinal game against St. John.
Emma McBride tallied 14 points to lead the Little River offense, while Melanie Renken had a strong rebounding game with 13.
Little River scored 14 points in three of the four quarters.
“I thought the girls played hard all night,” Little River coach Trey Look said. “Proud of the way they battled against a much improved Ell-Saline team. Having a week off really showed this game. We struggled rebounding tonight, which gave Ell-Saline some easy putbacks. We shot the ball better in the second half and hit some clutch free throws. We shared the well tonight with 14 assists and when we do that we have a good chance to win. We’ll have to come out Thursday ready to play much better to advance to the finals.”
Moundridge plays Macksville in today’s 8:00 game and a victory would probably set up a semifinal showdown with No. 1 seed Central Plains at 8:00 Thursday.
