It appears McPherson High’s wrestling team will finally have a league dual where the opponent is going to fill all the weights.

MHS heads to Augusta for a Division III matchup of upper-division teams.

The Bullpups are 2-0 in league duals, while the Orioles are 2-1. Mat time is set for 6 p.m.

“It should be fun Thursday,” said MHS coach Doug Kretzer, whose team seemingly has wrestled non-stop since the calendar turned to January. “Both teams will fill all weights. Not sure of their quality of depth up and down the varsity lineup, but they've got about five very skilled wrestlers. Bonus points will again be the key to the dual.”

The only uncertainty, Kretzer said, is at 160 where Garrett Rausch was injured at Hays last week and may not be able to go.

Unlike the first two league duals where the Bullpups romped, this one should go down to the wire.

“Augusta always wrestles tough, so it will be a good dual,” Kretzer said.

The Bullpups were eighth last week at Hays, but were missing standout 120-pounder Rhett Edmonson. Kretzer said they probably would have been a Top 3 team if he’d been available, as the Top 10 teams were compressed.

The Bullpups, after wrestling back-to-back high-level tournaments the past two weekends at Newton and Hays, have this weekend off.
