The Hays girls lived through a nightmare in the second game of the Mid America Classic, thanks to Wichita Northwest’s suffocating defense.

Hays, which will return to the Roundhouse next month for the sub-state, was an ego-sapping 3 of 24 from the field in the first half and scored just 8 points and it wasn’t a whole lot better the rest of the way as the Grizzlies advanced to their first-ever spot in the semifinals with a 47-27 victory.

The Indians entered as the higher seed and were a surprising 8-2, but turned it over 14 times in the first half alone and finished with 25.

Northwest’s Alexis Snodgrass led Northwest to its 22-8 first-half lead with 13 points and finished with 15. Four players scored 5 points each for Hays, which finished 11 of 47 from the field, 0 of 11 at the line.

The Grizzlies will play Manhattan in the 6:00 semifinals on Friday while Hays goes up against Shawnee Mission Northwest in the 3:00 game.
