KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The breakup has officially begun.
The first of the Kansas City Royals’ free agent dominos fell today as Lorenzo Cain is returning to his former team as the Milwaukee Brewers announced it had signed the longtime KC center fielder to a 5-year, $80 million contract.
Coupled with the Brewers’ trade earlier in the day for standout Miami outfielder Christian Yelich, they have totally revamped their outfield and will be a contender for the NL Central title.
Cain, 31, had come to the Royals in the Zack Grienke trade that helped reshape the Royals as the deal also brought Alcides Escobar. Also in that deal was Jake Odorizzi, who helped bring James Shields and Wade Davis in a trade.
Cain played a key role in the Royals making the World Series in both 2014 and 2015, beating the Mets in the 2015 Series.
