VALLEY CENTER — McPherson’s seventh-grade boys are now within a game of .500 after a 49-15 rout of Valley Center on Thursday.
Hunter Alvord fired in 19 points and Sam Becker chipped in with 12 to lead the McPherson attack as it is now 5-6 on the season.
“Other than a disappointing start to the third quarter offensively, I thought we put four good quarters together,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “We had a bit of a lead at half and talked about not losing focus and playing to our level. We then looked completely inept for the first two minutes of the half, maybe I need to growl a little more. But defensively I was very proud of the efforts tonight. One guy who has been playing his rear off, especially in practice, is Dawson Gottwald. He does so many things that the stat sheet doesn’t recognize and we’ve been very proud of his work ethic day in and day out.”
The B-team was edged 29-27 despite 10 point by Kendrick McCloud.
“We had some serious sickness and injuries that hit our B-roster hard and we had some guys step up and play some major minutes in a tight game,” Burghart said. “Though we came out on the losing end, our effort was excellent from start to finish. Kendrick McCloud really rose to the occasion and battled in a position he’s not used to being in and Mason Clark has been hitting the boards with ferocity over the last week and it’s been a pleasure to watch. We have our last two games next week with this group so we’re hoping to heal up and finish strong.”
