KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals are now 1-1 in retaining their free agents.
A day after losing Lorenzo Cain to the Milwaukee Brewers for a hefty price tag of $80 million over 5 years, the Royals today announced that free-agent shortstop Alcides Escobar will be back with the team in 2018.
Escobar, a former All-Star, has agreed to a 1-year, $2.5 million deal with the club.
The 31-year-old Escobar played all 162 games last year and hit .250 with 36 doubles after a wretched first two months of the season.
He has a lifetime .260 batting average. He was a Gold Glove winner and All-Star during the Royals’ World Championship season in 2015.
Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Jason Vargas remain unsigned.
